REPOWERS

A re-powered involves stripping out an old, obsolete prime mover and installing new, matching to the transmission and replacing inlet, exhaust and cooling systems as required. In essence the work is similar to that of a re-manufacture but without the new bodywork, pneumatics and control systems.

A 'typical' repowered loco - a Barclay 0-6-0DH, formerly with a Rolls-Royce 8 cylinder engine, repowered with a Cummins 14 litre. The cooler group was modified to ensure coolant de-aeration, and the transmission cooling taken on to a seperate matrix. The loco also had a hydrostatic drive provided for a  compressor.
